  • Reto Guler organised and ran a successful outreach activity to school learners on behalf of the Division of Immunology. On World Aids Day (1 December 2017), 80 learners from Athlone, Langa, Guguletu and Lentegeur in Mitchells Plain attended a workshop in the IDM, which included practical experiments, lectures and a visit to the Christiaan Barnard museum. The IDM contributed funding, and the workshop featured in the Weekend Argus.
  • Joseph Raimondo had two outreach activities to school learners:
    • IBRO-SIMONS Computational Neuroscience Imbizo 2017. He directs the computational neuroscience school to develop this discipline in Africa. This 3-week school comprised 18 African students and 12 international students under the tutelage of 15 faculty including world leaders in the field of computational neuroscience.
    • IBRO-UCT African Advanced School on Techniques in Neuroscience 2017. His lab helped organise and run this school on advanced techniques in neuroscience. Many of the techniques established in the lab (whole-cell patch-clamp, interface local field potential recordings and Ca2+ imaging) featured as part of the school.
  • World TB day events were held by CIDRI (in Khayelitsha) and SATVI (in Worcester).
